sweet weekend

So, we left Thursday night to head out to the Okanagan for our big end-of-summer houseboating trip. After an usually quick drive out, we stayed the night at Scott's in Vernon. Got up much too early for my liking and drove out to Sicamous the next morning to load up the houseboat and learn to drive it. A little complicated, but I actually did some houseboat driving on the Saturday.

After one failed attempt, we beached on a pretty quiet area the first night, and it was nice and calming. Sat in the hot tub in the evening. Had a good sleep. Then the next day, after picking up a bunch of garbage on the shore (including a free houseboating glass!), and taking lots of photos, we took off to roam around a bit. We stopped by a waterfall, and the boys jumped off the top of the boat and went down the waterslide. Then over to the floating store in the middle of the lake (pretty cool!). Then drove around a bunch more, and eventually picked a beach with a couple of other boats to stay for the night. One by one more boats pulled up...little did we know this was a party beach.

It was pretty fun until I tried to go to bed. Had kind of a rough sleep that night. But it was funny, we'd beached right next to this boat we'd seen earlier that was a stag party for this guy Andy (ANDY!!!) that had a banner that said "Andy's stag, Show us your tits!" on it. We also caught up with this boat on the way in Sunday, as they rescued tall Scott's cowboy hat from the water, when it was lost during a little send off for Andy's stag boat. Sunday when we were ready to leave, we had some trouble getting the boat started, and so were a little late getting in.

Said goodbye to Carla, who's heading to Australia for law school tomorrow, and drove back to Vernon. After a pit stop for lunch, started the drive back to Vancouver. A little long, but not bad.

Upon coming home, Hancock and Graham (and his friend) came over. Penny and Dave came up from downstairs, and we all hung out for a while. I was soooo tired, but it was so much fun that I stayed up a bit longer. Woke up to Graham knocking on the door to come say adios before heading to the airport. And after getting up and hanging out while Scott jump started Hancock's SUV, everyone was gone.

Had a nap, cleaned up the house. Got a call from my supervisor, who has nearly arranged for me to take this class I really want to get into. One more bit of red tape, and I should be in. Scott rented a video last night, called "Vulgar" by the same guy that does all the Jay and Silent Bob movies. Don't rent it, it's traumatizing, and not in a good way!

Today: Did some yoga. Gotta have breakfast, then take veggies up to school to give away (garden is making tons of tomatoes!), bake some chocolate chip bars, a little work, maybe some laundry, and gotta take in 3 rolls of film for developing.

Till next time,
midge.

and people wonder why i'm reluctant to get my hair cut...

and this is why i hate getting my hair cut:

the lady wasn't bad, but she just didn't listen. i asked for a trim (2 inches), and some of the half bangs that you swoop to the side (which she said she knew exactly what i was talking about) that would hit just above my glasses.

i was given a trim of at least 4 inches, and the 'bangs' were so long that i had to cut another couple inches off of them when i got home. she didn't even wash my hair! hello, if i wanted a magicuts cut, i would've gone to magic cuts and paid a third of the price.

i think i did okay damage control, cause they look acceptable now, but if i had wanted to cut them myself, i wouldn't have spent the money to go to the salon!

man, what is with people?!?!?

tomorrow: houseboating!

and bigger surprises yet.

this morning my mom phoned. first thing she says is "i'm not coming" and goes into some explanation about it involving my dad not feeling well, doctors' appointments, and having to work some things out. two days ago, my dad felt well enough to come out. now he can't wait five days for whatever breakdown he's going through this time? yeah right.

i had cleared my entire week until leaving for the okanagan on thursday for the two of them, and now neither of them can even bother to show up. parents are not supposed to let their kids down like this.

what should i do this week, keep working on the thesis or take an alone vacation? i could still visit relatives and go downtown and do fun things on my own, even though it doesn't seem nearly as good.

blah. dumbasses.

omigod.

first an aside: i got tickets to the sarah harmer concert in october!

now onto the omigod: i just bought a cell phone.

i can hardly believe it myself, as not too long i was a staunch anti-cellphonist. but one of the things that stresses me out about my health stuff is that if i go somewhere on my own and get sick, i am stranded. and i think that stops me from being more adventurous. that, and the fact that i get lost quite easily.

anyway, it's a low-end phone but a good brand (samsung), so it should be sturdy enough. i'm just doing pay-as you go, since it's more of an emergency/travel use phone than an everyday thing. it's nice, but not fancy, and a sweet feature is that it was the only one in the lower price range that comes with 2 batteries, which is nice for travelling and not having to recharge all the time.

hopefully it will serve me well.

there might be a promotion too so i can get free voicemail, but i've gotta phone bell up. if you want the number, email me.

what country are you?

not to detract from yesterday's more important question...but this is fun!

You're
the United Kingdom!

You're a much weaker person than you used to be, but you still
act like you did when everyone looked up to you.  Despite this, you're
probably a better person than you were when you had so much power over those
around you.  Though you do have a strange fascination with jewels and monarchs,
which lets you play in castles, but also end up leading a sort of tabloid lifestyle.
You really like the Beatles, even more than you like Oasis.

i need your opinion

ok, friends. you know me fairly well, so i need your opinion. if you could suggest one thing that i could do that you think would make me significantly happier and calmer, that would be great.

if your suggestion is to quit/take a break from school that's fine, but i'd appreciate a second suggestion (since i'm trying not to entertain that idea right now). any suggestions from psychiatry, to naturopaths, to travel, or anything you can think of will do. if you have several suggestions, give 'er. the more the better.

thanks.

The racoons are thirsty.

Saturday, Scott and I went to try out a harder trail up on the mountain. I wanted to quit after the first 1/3, but pushed myself to keep going. By 2/3 through, I doubted whether I would be able to make it out at all. The biking was fine, it was the pushing my bike up several steep (really steep) sections that was wearing me out, and with an upset stomach and the crazy hotness, it was too much. We decided to take the powerlines back up to the road, and pushed our bikes (me, with some significant help from Scott) up the trail. I was exhausted by the time we got to the road, and Scott was even pretty wiped, but we still had to ride back to the car.

After battling off some coyotes, a small anxiety attack, and much energy-less pedalling, we were back home. I took a nap, and then proceeded to spend the rest of the day laying on the couch.

I would say I'm proud of myself for pushing myself that far, but I'm just not one of those kinds of people.

Aside from that, the weekend was fairly uneventful--went to the gym, rented a video, played guitar, did some schoolwork.

Last night I went out on the deck, and it was wet. It had not rained. I realized my watering can had tipped over. But it was full, and weighs quite a bit when it's filled up, so there's no way it fell over. Little wet paw prints gave away the culprits.

Irwin (the elderly gardening man next door) gave me tons of tomatoes, a couple zucchinis, and beans galore today when I brought him his mail (it had been delivered to our house...again...apparently this is happening to all the neighbours). When I went to water my veggies, I picked a mixing bowl full of tomatoes (how did I not notice there were so many?), 3 cucmbers, and a bunch of carrots. I hope the boys are hungry for some veggies!

lap of luxury

Helloooo super-comfy-new-desk chair!!! Oh man, this is sweetness. I just went and bought a new office chair for my desk at home, as the one I've had for the past 4 years was a cheap-ass 30$ ikea chair that has likely done permanent nerve damage to my ass. I picked this one up at Staples, and I'm glad I went back there today, as it was the last one of this model left (and my fave that I'd found so far), and I got it for 30$ less because I took the floor-display one. How sweet is that?

I also braved the Save On (again), which was a lot less busy than last time, and I parked really far from the doors so that I would not have to battle the idiots who drive in the parkade there. So I finally picked up some new Tofutti cream cheese and sour cream, which I have been desperate for!

What a productive day!

I also finished typing up my notes for the theory section I've been working on last night. When I saved the last chunk that I had typed up, just in time to avoid complete carpal-tunnel induced numbness, Word crashed and lost all the work I'd done at that sitting, so I had to retype it. But now I can move on to other things, so it's all good.

My folks are coming to visit in 11 days! I can hardly believe it, but my dad is even planning on coming. He doesn't want to do anything while he's here, but I guess it's better than nothing.

Incase there are any other fans, I think the last episode of Joe Schmo is on tonight.

That's all for now.

Friends of late

I discovered a few days ago that I am missing a hubcap. I have to assume it is somewhere between here and Vernon. If anyone sees a Volvo hubcap on the way to the Okanagan, can you please pick it up for me? Thanks.

Bought a ticket for the big lottery yesterday. 2$=only one right number. The old lady in front of us in line (who had cut us off in the parking lot) spent 52$ on lotto tickets. I wonder how often she does that.

Went downtown last night to Parv's and caught the fireworks finale. Very nice, however, my stomach was not being a trooper (surprise, surprise). Somehow managed to make it back home with the hoards of people still lining up for the skytrain at 1am. Slept like a rock.

Went into Lululemon on the way from the skytrain to Parv's to pick up some work out pants. Had it all worked out as to what I was going to try on (from their website) only to get there and find out that the pants I wanted were from last year and they didn't have them anymore. Got too confused with all the selection and left unsatisfied. This is probably the 4th time this has happened. There is such thing as too much selection. When I can't find a matching pair of pants and a top within ten minutes, I think there is something fundamentally wrong with the place.

Must go eat peaches.
