i may have done something drastic.

You all know that I'm not a particularly impulsive person, right? But yesterday, I woke up and really wanted to cut my hair, so I did. Yes, that's right, I cut my own hair. Now I know, everyone says it's a bad idea, but ever since I got caught hiding behind a couch, hacking away at my hair with a pair of kiddy scissors at age 4, I've had urges to cut my own hair. And I've always been told not to, that I'll screw it up and regret it later.

Thing is, I HATE going to the hair salon. I hate the whole process. I have no patience for it, and I always end up paying $35 for a cut I'm not happy with anyway. So, yesterday, I decided that I would save some money, get it over with, and cut my own hair. Even if it turned out bad, I would have had to go to the hairdresser either way, and at least I would have done it once, so I could get over this long standing urge.

Just to give you an idea of how much I cut off, here is a photo from a couple weeks ago:

And here are a couple photos after the cut, the first one is what it looks like blow-dried:

And this one is with it just air-dried:

Not too bad, huh? It was pretty challenging getting the back evened out and getting a hang of it, so it took me a while, but I saved some $, did something I've always wanted to, and am pretty satisfied with how it turned out, so I think it was a pretty positive thing all-around!

Also, I have enough to donate for the program that makes wigs for kids who are cancer patients, which is great--I have one ponytail from yesterday, and one from my last big haircut. Did you know that each wig takes at least 15 donations, and is worth about $3000? Since my hair hasn't been dyed or permed, I figured it was the least I could do, if I'm good at one thing, it's growing hair fast!

If you have untreated hair, and are planning to cut off 8" or more, think about donating it! Details are at the Canadian Cancer Society webpage.

Will try and get some photos from the Kootenays posted soon (we went there last week for road trip after Graham's wedding), but it might take a few days cause we're heading out to Tall Scott's cabin for the night tomorrow.

Till then!

June Garden Blog

See my latest plant journal entry at You Grow Girl!

----------

the good, the bad, and the really ugly.

I began the season with high spirits, unfortunately, the ugly weather out here has put a cramp in my grand plans. My garden plot is a bog and has subsequently STILL not been planted. I don?t know how much longer I can hold out, but the rain just won?t let up! The patio garden (protected from the rain by our ridiculously large roof overhang) on the other hand, is doing fairly well!

The Good:

Miracle of miracles, my lavender is blooming!!! I guess it does flower after all, and it?s just lovely!

The nasturtiums are also blooming like crazy, and have been attracting tons of humming birds, which are much too quick for me to get a photo of, but are amazying to watch.

And figgy?s got some great leaves going?no sign of any little figs yet, but keep your fingers crossed!

The Bad:

I was just away for ten days for a wedding and road trip, and had to leave my plants in the hands of a friend?this friend is a gardener, so I wasn?t worried. The house plants are okay, though pretty over watered, but the chocolate mint must have gotten missed on the patio, because it was a dry shrivelled mess when I got back. I watered it promptly, and I think enough has come back to life that it will pull through. Here is a before and after of the damage:

Before:

After:

And finally, for the really ugly? I had to rip my dill out right before leaving for my little trip, since an aphid problem had gone unnoticed, and was completely out of hand. It was just too much to manage, and was starting to spread to other plants, so for the greater good, the dill had to go. There was also some kind of worm on the stem, which was equally concerning. I love dill, so it was heartwrenching to pull it out, but it really had to be done.

Sorry for the horrible lighting, these were taken in the evening, but can you see the critters?

Here?s hoping that the weather turns soon so I can get out in the plot and get some things growing!

Till then,
midge.

Blair-Bush pre-G8 press conference

I was just watching a little CBC Newsworld while eating some leftovers for lunch, when they cut the show off to go to live coverage of a press conference with PM Blair and President Bush regarding their pre-G8 talks.

Does anyone else have out of body experiences watching this stuff? It's so surreal, like it's the '80s and I'm watching some kind of movie about 2005 politics. I seriously think Bush thinks he's God or something. And what exactly is Blair up to? Why has he continued this relationship with the US? How the hell did both these loose canons get re-elected???

Wow, Bush just name-dropped a little friend named "Bono"...how cooool. And why is Bush pretending he cares about third world poverty and climate change. WTF? Who is he trying to kid?

Anyway, just had to get that out.

Oh, and by the by, does anyone else find it inappropriate that Bush would call his National Security Advisor, Condoleeza Rice, "Condie" in an internationally broadcast press-conference?

Way to govern Georgie. Way to govern.

just call me dopey

it was a car in the visitor parkade. scott went and knocked on the door of the apartment it was from and finally someone answered (but wouldn't even open their door, so we don't know who is actually responsible), and said they'd "take care of it". they didn't even appologize or show any remorse! friggin dumbasses. and they took their sweet time getting out there, but after it had gone off about four more times, finally we heard someone go turn it off, and we had peace.

of course by this time, it was light outside, the birds were chirping, and i'd been awake for well over an hour, so it took me close to an hour to get back to sleep. luckily, managed to sleep in pretty late, but i'm still groggy.

did i mention we have no hot water in our building? so, no refreshing wake-me-up shower for us. it went out yesterday, and it seems they're having trouble getting the part necessary to fix it. we may be hot-waterless till monday. totally unacceptable! as if there isn't this 'part' in all of the city.

what the hell is wrong with people???!!!

note the time

it's 4:30am. some fucking alarm has been going off for an hour and a half, every five minutes. there are lights on in six other apartments i can see, so evidently it is not just keeping US awake. friggin idiots, i think it's a car alarm. scott has gone out to investigate.

this was supposed to be my night of good sleep, since last night was interupted by a bad headache and sprinklers going off at 2am. tonight the sprinklers went off again, and i thought that was the worst of it. boy was i wrong.

i'm so fucking tired. fucking idiots.
