May 23, 2006 YGG blog: Garden update

Just archiving my YGG blog.

--------

We managed to upgrade our plot this year! Last year we had one along the evil bottom row, which has trees along the south side (ie. less sun), and is at the bottom of the slope (ie. really damp). We lucked out and got one along the top row, so we should fare much better than last year (I hope!), and be able to grow stuff that couldn?t tolerate the dampness last year. This is what the plot looked like before weeding:
The weedy plot
You may or may not be able to tell, but we inhereted a big patch of chives halfway up, and a big patch of garlic scallions at the nearest end. The rest of the weeds are pretty much gone (except for a few monsters along the side), and once the rest of this week of rain passes, seeds will be going in asap! Right now there are only two tomato plants.

Speaking of tomatoes, I scored some great tomato plants from the local farmers market yesterday:

Two will be on the balcony in containers, a Window Box Roma and a Kootenai. And two are in the plot, a Sicilian Saucer and a Green Zebra, which is supposed to be striped yellow and green when ripe. I?m super excited because I didn?t grow any tomatoes last year, and have been craving them like crazy!

As far as the deck plants go, I planted some lettuce and spinach in a planter box, and they should be sprouting any day now. And for anyone who?s interested to know, Figgy (my Brown Turkey Fig tree) is doing well after the big pruning. (Figgy is essentially a stick, and under the advice of Brian Minter, a master gardener, who I called on his CBC segment, I cut the top foot of the ?tree? off about a month ago.) The bottom piece has 4 little buds sprouting leaves, and the top piece is in water, starting to root and happily growing until I repot it. I?ll snap some photos next time it?s nice out.

i'm on metroblogging vancouver!

EDITED: whoops, i guess i had the wrong web address pasted in! it's fixed now...

Check it out! Metroblogging Vancouver lists City Girl Designs as one of May's interesting Vancouver websites!

No, it's not a total coincidence...I commented on a post where they were trying to entice their quiet readers to comment by offering to mention your site...but hey, it's still cool!!!
